The Old Setup

I absolutely love camping, but my personal definition of the hobby has never exactly revolved around true "roughing it," which explains why I have always been deeply fascinated by innovative camper designs. The very first model I ever owned was a 15-foot travel trailer. We originally picked this up following a highly unsuccessful attempt at utilizing a compact truck tent and air mattress configuration in the bed of our old Toyota Tacoma. I am sure that specific product works wonderfully for some, but in our experience, it really only functions well when paired with a full-sized truck bed.

A decade later, and I’d find that Go Fast Campers and other companies solved this problem by going vertical and move on to‍ ‍my current setup.

The retro Road Runner trailer initially seemed like the ultimate solution for a couple who mostly sticks to fully developed RV parks. However, we quickly found that the integrated wet bath—with its combined, cramped shower and toilet configuration—was simply too small, rendering it highly impractical for our day-to-day needs.

Consequently, we ended up gifting this classic camper to a retired friend who has been meticulously restoring it. The very first modification he made was ripping out the cramped shower/toilet combo and replacing it with a simple, functional bucket system—which, ironically, matches exactly what we are utilizing in our current overlanding setup! 🙂

I will make sure to capture and post some updated photos here as soon as his full restoration project is complete.
